More of Lhasa

On September 9 we spent more time in Lhasa and visited Drepung Monastery in the morning.

It was an overcast day

Walking to the entrance

Drepung Monastery is one of the six largest monasteries of the Gelupa Sect and has the largest Tibetan Buddhism College along with the most number of monks in Tibet

Small door

This is where the monks sit

The locals pour clarified yak butter into butter lamps as an offering

The butter melts and no, you can't buy popcorn in the next room

Another assembly hall

Another shot of the view before leaving the monastery

Before heading to Johkang Temple, I spotted this lady walking in the middle of the street with her goat

Our next stop was the Johkang Temple, a four-storied temple located in the center of old Lhasa. Construction began around 647 AD during the time of the Tibet King Songstan Gampo. It was only after extensions in later periods that made the temple into its current size of 25,100 square meters.

Inside Johkang Temple

More yak hair decorations

Empty hall

A good view of Potala Palace from the rooftop

The view looking the other way

In case we forgot what country we were in

Gold tops

On the 3rd floor

Close up of some statues

I liked this door

Since we were already in Old Town, we decided to walk around Barkhor Street, we were told to walk around clockwise.

It's one of the busiest streets

Not too bad the day we walked it

This restaurant was supposedly frequented by the 6th Dalai Lama, Tsangyang Gyatso
